Welcome to the third in a special Golf Course Home series, the Top 20 Golf Communities in North America. The series focuses on the golf communities that are leading the charge to create more soul-satisfying and inclusive community experiences beyond golf.
Walkable village centers and the human connections they create for community residents are enjoying renewed attention. A generation ago, an architectural concept called New Urbanism became a much-acclaimed movement with landscape-changing promise.
Its goal was to restore the small-town, human-scale living experience that had been largely forgotten in the age of the automobile and superhighways.
Gated golf communities have discovered the value the village-style central space. The result has made daily life more conducive to casual, old-style human interaction (golf carts not withstanding). Here are three communities that have developed walkable village centers, and in the process, elevated themselves into our Top 20 Golf Communities list.
Daniel Island, SC
Walkable public spaces make Daniel Island a friendly place.

The Pinckney Social Hall anchors the Riverbend Village Center.

Within it is The Town Square, anchored at one end by Pinckney Social Hall, a 17,000-square-foot venue with a ballroom. Lectures, workshops, dances and concerts are regular events and a natural outgrowth of this approach to planning.
The Yemassee Crafts Center building is also located on the square and includes studios for ceramics, arts and crafts, sewing and photography.
Sun City Riverbend residents have access to a full complement of local and visiting culture events at Magnolia Hall—a 16,000-square-foot performing arts center. No previous generation of Americans has embraced lifetime learning and continuing education likes Baby Boomers have. That desire includes both art appreciation and studio training.
Here are two GCH communities where the pursuit of the arts has resulted in the creation of superlative art studios and supporting programs that encourage their residents to see how far their talents can take them. The results also elevate them into our Top 20 list.
Palmetto Bluff, SC
The Artist in Residence cottage at Palmetto Bluff, SC.
> Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton SC has from the outset pursued a member experience that emphasizes fine arts, crafts and literature. Of particular note is the community’s Artist in Residence program which is a collaboration with the popular Southern culture magazine, Garden & Gun.

Notable artists from sculptors to glass-blowers to textile designers come for extended stays and present their works. Daniel Island, SC: Life on the water just got better.
> Daniel Island, Charleston SC recently announced that its central fund had granted $1.5 million grant for significant improvement projects. Guggenheim Plaza, in the heart of downtown Daniel Island, will be upgraded to include a large wooden deck that will serve as an area for events and entertainment.
The grant will also cover enhancements along the waterfront trail and dock on the Wando River. Additions to the public dock will include a kayak and SUP launch, additional dock slips for day boating and sailing, and a covered pier head. Red Ledges Sees Record Sales
Red Ledges, UT: Enjoying impressive sales.
> Red Ledges, Heber City UT is coming off a record sales year in 2017, with 150 closings and about $64 million in sales volume. After it took close to nine years to get the first 100 homes built and sold at Red Ledges, there have now been approximately 550 sales over the past several years, with 100-plus additional homes in the construction or design process.

Welcome to the second in a special Golf Course Home series called the “Top 20 Golf Communities in North America.” The series focuses on the golf communities that are leading the charge to creating more soul-satisfying and inclusive community experiences beyond golf.
This farm-to-table movement and community farms and gardens have become a welcome focus for residents at the two golf communities noted here. The growing and harvesting of crops by hand calms the spirit and reconnects residents with the land, and in the process has elevated the communities into our Top 20 list.
Comanche Trace, Kerrville, TX

> Comanche Trace, Kerrville TX attracts people whose interests and hobbies truly run the gamut–from pickle ball to bridge to mahjong to convertible cars (the “Topless Club”).
However, no activity draws a more devoted following than the Community Garden at this 1,300-acre private community. The garden is a spacious, level piece of acreage marked by sturdy construction and lots of personalized decor.
Comanche Trace gardeners spend long hours here. They grow flowers, vegetables and kitchen herbs while appreciating the Texas Hill Country’s extended growing season and praising each others’ agricultural successes. Send me more information about Comanche Trace!
The Landings at Skidaway Island, GA
Skidaway Farms has grown up to include a demonstration center and more.
> The Landings on Skidaway Island, GA owns and maintains Skidaway Farms, conceived as “a garden for everyone.” Residents of the GCH community embraced the concept from the start. They lay out plots, build paths, erect fences to keep out deer and otherwise do their agricultural thing.
Eventually the community added picnic tables, benches, beehives, children’s garden and demonstration center. Plots rent annually according to their size—$100 a year for a 10 -by-20 space.
The benefit comes outwardly in the form of wonderful fresh produce and flowers. And inwardly, there is the satisfaction of working the land with like-minded green-thumbed friends. Send me more information about The Landings!
