Welcome to the third in a special Golf Course Home series, the Top 20 Golf Communities in North America. The series focuses on the golf communities that are leading the charge to create more soul-satisfying and inclusive community experiences beyond golf.
Walkable village centers and the human connections they create for community residents are enjoying renewed attention. A generation ago, an architectural concept called New Urbanism became a much-acclaimed movement with landscape-changing promise.
Its goal was to restore the small-town, human-scale living experience that had been largely forgotten in the age of the automobile and superhighways.
Gated golf communities have discovered the value the village-style central space. The result has made daily life more conducive to casual, old-style human interaction (golf carts not withstanding). Here are three communities that have developed walkable village centers, and in the process, elevated themselves into our Top 20 Golf Communities list.
Daniel Island, SC
Walkable public spaces make Daniel Island a friendly place.
> Daniel Island, Charleston SC regularly earns praise from architectural forums dedicated to recognizing the best in retro-style, walkable, small-town streetscapes and building design.
Designed as the “island town” it has indeed become, Daniel Island has kept to its core values throughout long years of success and growth. Community parks, churches, three schools and a classic downtown dotted by outdoor cafes and shops are all reachable on foot by bicycle.

The Pinckney Social Hall anchors the Riverbend Village Center.

Within it is The Town Square, anchored at one end by Pinckney Social Hall, a 17,000-square-foot venue with a ballroom. Lectures, workshops, dances and concerts are regular events and a natural outgrowth of this approach to planning.
The Yemassee Crafts Center building is also located on the square and includes studios for ceramics, arts and crafts, sewing and photography.
Sun City Riverbend residents have access to a full complement of local and visiting culture events at Magnolia Hall—a 16,000-square-foot performing arts center. Dataw Island Golf Tournament
Dataw Island, SC: Hosted exciting tournament.
> Dataw Island, SC recently hosted a major NCAA Division 1 golf event, the TaylorMade Intercollegiate Tournament. A championship with men’s and women’s division, the tournament has been a fixture at Dataw for seven seasons.
A field of 130 student-athletes competed this spring, comprising men’s teams from 14 colleges and women’s teams from 7. Daniel Island Concert, Picnic
Daniel Island, SC: Picnics are for fun, or competition.
> Daniel Island, Charleston SC will host its Annual Concert in the Park event, at the popular Smythe Park venue, on Sat., May 26 from 6 to 10 p.m. Performing live will be the Joe Clarke Big Band in a free lakeside concert. It’s a classic big-band ensemble featuring a complete horn section plus guitar, drums, bass and piano.
Concert-goers are invited to bring their own picnic dinner or purchase specialty dinners from a wide array of food trucks and vendor carts. Indian River Colony Club, FL: Event was nostalgic, entertaining.

No previous generation of Americans has embraced lifetime learning and continuing education likes Baby Boomers have. That desire includes both art appreciation and studio training.
Here are two GCH communities where the pursuit of the arts has resulted in the creation of superlative art studios and supporting programs that encourage their residents to see how far their talents can take them. The results also elevate them into our Top 20 list.
Palmetto Bluff, SC
The Artist in Residence cottage at Palmetto Bluff, SC.
> Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton SC has from the outset pursued a member experience that emphasizes fine arts, crafts and literature. Of particular note is the community’s Artist in Residence program which is a collaboration with the popular Southern culture magazine, Garden & Gun.
The program’s center of operations is a bungalow-style Artist Cottage located in the the newly constructed Moreland Village neighborhood. Notable artists from sculptors to glass-blowers to textile designers come for extended stays and present their works. Daniel Island Dock, Trail Updates
Daniel Island, SC: Life on the water just got better.
> Daniel Island, Charleston SC recently announced that its central fund had granted $1.5 million grant for significant improvement projects. Guggenheim Plaza, in the heart of downtown Daniel Island, will be upgraded to include a large wooden deck that will serve as an area for events and entertainment.
The grant will also cover enhancements along the waterfront trail and dock on the Wando River. Additions to the public dock will include a kayak and SUP launch, additional dock slips for day boating and sailing, and a covered pier head. Red Ledges Sees Record Sales
Red Ledges, UT: Enjoying impressive sales.
> Red Ledges, Heber City UT is coming off a record sales year in 2017, with 150 closings and about $64 million in sales volume. After it took close to nine years to get the first 100 homes built and sold at Red Ledges, there have now been approximately 550 sales over the past several years, with 100-plus additional homes in the construction or design process.
The community’s banner sales report noted that Red Ledges isn’t alone, as the golf course real estate industry continues its recent strong performance in certain markets and locations, with positive momentum carrying into 2018. Send me more information about Red Ledges!
