Walkable village centers and the human connections they create for community residents are enjoying renewed attention. A generation ago, an architectural concept called New Urbanism became a much-acclaimed movement with landscape-changing promise.
Its goal was to restore the small-town, human-scale living experience that had been largely forgotten in the age of the automobile and superhighways.
Gated golf communities have discovered the value the village-style central space. The result has made daily life more conducive to casual, old-style human interaction (golf carts not withstanding). Here are three communities that have developed walkable village centers, and in the process, elevated themselves into our Top 20 Golf Communities list.

The Yemassee Crafts Center building is also located on the square and includes studios for ceramics, arts and crafts, sewing and photography.
Sun City Riverbend residents have access to a full complement of local and visiting culture events at Magnolia Hallāa 16,000-square-foot performing arts center. Here are two GCH communities where the pursuit of the arts has resulted in the creation of superlative art studios and supporting programs that encourage their residents to see how far their talents can take them. The results also elevate them into our Top 20 list.
Palmetto Bluff, SC
The Artist in Residence cottage at Palmetto Bluff, SC.

> Daniel Island, Charleston SC Ā recently announced that its central fund had granted $1.5 million grant for significant improvement projects. Guggenheim Plaza, in the heart of downtown Daniel Island, will be upgraded to include a large wooden deck that will serve as an area for events and entertainment.
The grant will also cover enhancements along the waterfront trail and dock on the Wando River. This farm-to-table movement and community farms and gardens have become a welcome focus for residents at the two golf communities noted here. The growing and harvesting of crops by hand calms the spirit and reconnects residents with the land, and in the process has elevated the communities into our Top 20 list.
Comanche Trace, Kerrville, TX
Comanche Trace farmers proudly pose withĀ their bounty.

However, no activity draws a more devoted following than the Community Garden at this 1,300-acre private community. The garden is a spacious, level piece of acreage marked by sturdy construction and lots of personalized decor.

Dog Parks
We begin with a subject close to the hearts of a broad range of Americansātheir pets, and specifically, their dogs. Home just wouldnāt be the same without the loyal family dog, and many families would simply not consider a community that didnāt allow Rover to come along.
Today, not only are dogs being welcomed, but they also have a spacious, well-designed park dedicated just to them to romp around in and meet other critters.
