Vineyard Open House Real Estate is an outgrowth of Principal Broker/Owner David Lott’s nearly 30 years marketing resort real estate and master-planned golf and water view communities.
He worked in various editorial and marketing positions at CBS and the New York Times before starting his own marketing firm Lott Custom Communications in 1990.
At the NYT he wrote special sections on golf and resort real estate and was marketing services manager for the company’s seven magazines, including Golf Digest and Tennis.
He launched Golf Course Home, a consumer guide to golf real estate and master-planned communities, as a special section for INC. Magazine before migrating the concept to the internet in 1999 as GolfCourseHome.com.
Golf Course Home eventually became the Golf Course Home Network with the addition of WaterViewHome.net and other Network websites.
Lott has long held an interest in real estate. He is a Martha’s Vineyard resident where he built his first house on the island at the age of 22. His fascination with homes and real estate continues to this day, most visibly in the founding of Vineyard Open House Real Estate in 2013. Lott first visited the island with his parents, Jeri and Schuyler Lott, back in the 1950s, when they stayed at John and Emma Daggett’s at Cedar Tree Neck.
He eventually joined the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club where he became the Tennis Professional during his college years at the University of Pennsylvania. He also spent time at the West Chop Club where he was the Tennis Professional for four years.
The Lott family island ties, however, go back much farther with family members having been coming to the island since the 1890s. Lott’s grandfather, Harris Crist, retired to Vineyard Haven in 1936 from his position as managing editor/co-owner of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper and commissioned a 5-BR residence to be built overlooking the harbor at 93 Main.
His wife Addie Crist became an organist for Grace Church while he followed his passion for golf at the Oak Bluff’s Country Club (now Farm Neck Golf Club).
Addie Crist’s greatest legacy is the Red Stocking Fund, which she started in 1938 with a few friends who knitted six red Christmas stockings and filled them for needy island children.

The club provides a safe haven for over 350 Bluffton-area students after school and over the summer.
